Windows 7 Gains Popularity over Windows XP

Gaining ground over Windows XP as the operating system of choice, Windows 7 has become the world's preferred OS as of the month of October. It appears that Windows 7 has something to offer computer users that Vista simply could not. At any rate, sales of the Windows 7 OS have been brisk, garnering a large sector of the desktop community. The expectation is that Windows 7 will continue to grow in popularity over both XP and Vista at least until the next Windows operating system is introduced for sale.

According to Statcounter, Windows 7 surpassed XP with a 1.58 percent lead (40.18 percent over 38.6 percent) in usage within the desktop market. Windows Vista lagged behind considerably, achieving only an 11.2 hold on the market share for desktop operating systems. Statcounter measures the popularity of an operating system by monitoring the operating systems used by website visitors to approximately 3 million different websites.

Originally released in 2001, Windows XP quickly gained popularity among desktop users. Once Windows 7 made its appearance, it quickly gained attention and its sales began to grow. While some initial popularity is to be expected when any new product launches, continued success is generally created due to positive performance reviews and a lack of complaints. The user friendliness and long-held popularity of Windows operating systems keeps them ahead of Macintosh operating systems as far as overall sales.

Several credible sources have mentioned that Windows 8 is already in the works. Its anticipated arrival on the marketplace is sometime in the middle of the year 2012. Perhaps the largest difference between Windows versions 8 and 7 is the substitution of a Start screen for the Start menu. The intention is to design it for user friendliness with links to essential aspects such as control panels, applications, and more.
